Eberhard Schoener about his Music

I believe in the Humanitarian message of Music. Emotions must be the credo, emotions have priority and the musician is required to deliver emotion to his audience.

Despite the diversity of my compositions, I think of myself first and foremost as a stage composer and - in our time, this is not such a far road to travel - as composer of film music. It is my desire to find a genuine contemporary form in the music that I create, a music that combines elements of traditional Opera music with music of our time (Rock'n 'Roll, Jazz or electronic music).

Does this make me an "eclectic?" If eclecticism means "Choice, Selection", then that's me. Eclecticism corresponds to my musical and esthetic understanding. I consider this tradition, which "selects" from the sheer unfathomable fund of existing music to be the most important contemporary musical form (Strawinsky, Bernstein and Tom Waits). This form, then, becomes the mirror of diverse cultures, which is especially rewarding and interesting for humans to experience at the beginning of the 21st millennium.

To create Virtopera, and in keeping with the texts (Cold Genius, Palazzo dell'Amore, Beleza Negra, a Nemesis), I have applied any style and idiom I could think of. The vantage point for this Internet-Opera-in-progress was the Cold-Genius Aria from the Opera "King Arthur" by Purcell. Therefore, instrumentation of the Opera "Cold Genius" is mostly based on the application of a classical music orchestra (violins, wood, metal, percussion), while at the same time retaining a large degree of transparency.

"Palazzo dell'Amore" receives its orientation to a large degree from the music of the 18th/19th century, the traditional forms of Italian Opera and the Madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi "Lamento della Ninfa."

"Beleza Negra" mixes Brazilian Candomblé and the Samba with the traditional orchestra and contemporary electronics. This Opera is best understood under the concept "New-Music-Theatre" (Phil Glass, Steve Reich, Meredith Monk and Tom Waits). Following this concept, illustrated in this art form, then, demonstrates my style of composition - clearly and substantially.

"A Nemesis" is based on a short story by Isabel Allende. In this music, the element of uncertainty is bound to the category of time. Through application of flexibility and re-interpretation, a semblance of identity is established. The Tango provides the element of Content, so that emotional impact and validity - which in today's life requires courage - is demonstrated on a platform, thereby becoming part of the established program.

All of these elements of style are represented in Virtopera, where they are forged into a new form - a new and unique style.

The Internet - this world-class-stage - now offers the possibility to utilize, free of all constraints and without prejudice, these new styles and cultures and to develop new forms of expression and perception. One could describe this as "postmodern", i.e. as music "based on modern music", and this would identify my music.
